The short version
- No cookies, no ads, no trackers, no selling or sharing your data.
- If you give me your email, it’s used only for what you asked: the quarterly email, or a reply to your question.
- You can have it deleted anytime by writing to [email protected].
What is collected, and why
If you subscribe to the quarterly email: your email address, the date and the wording you agreed to. Used only to send one email per quarter. Legal basis: your consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw anytime.
If you send a question: your email address and your message (and your name, if you add one). Used only to answer you. It does not subscribe you to anything. Legal basis: your request (Art. 6(1)(b)) and my legitimate interest in answering it (Art. 6(1)(f)).
With each submission I also store the page it was sent from, the country your
connection comes from (as reported by Cloudflare) and, if present, campaign
tags in the link (utm_…), so I know which articles people find useful.
If you comment on a post: comments run on a self-hosted
Commento instance at comments.fossengineer.com,
operated by me. Opening a post loads its comments from that server (so your
browser connects to it, like to any page). If you comment, the name, email and
comment you submit are stored there; signing in keeps a login token in your
browser’s storage. Legal basis: my legitimate interest in running a comment
section (Art. 6(1)(f)); ask me anytime to delete your comments or account.
When you just read the site: the hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes standard request data (IP address, browser, requested page) to serve pages and protect the site. Page statistics come from Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and doesn’t track you across sites.
Where it’s stored
| Who | What for | Data |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare, Inc. | Hosting, security, form storage (Workers KV), cookieless statistics | Request data; form submissions |
| Proton (Switzerland) | The mailbox the quarterly email and replies are sent from | Your email and our correspondence |
| My own notification server | A heads-up that a form arrived | Only the email domain (e.g. @example.org), never your address or message |
| My own Commento server | Post comments | Comments, and the name/email you give when commenting |
Cloudflare may process data outside the EU under the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
How long it’s kept
- Subscription: until you unsubscribe. Then it’s deleted.
- Questions: up to 24 months after our last exchange, then deleted automatically.
- Comments: as long as they’re published, or until you ask me to delete them.
